Architecture

The art and design that goes into making buildings is known as architecture. To communicate all aspects of the design, detailed drawings are used. In this field, the term plan is often used when referring to the full section view of these drawings. Architectural drawings describe and document an architect's design.

Engineering

Engineering can be a very broad term. It stems from the Latin ingenerare, meaning "to create". Because this could apply to everything that humans create, it is given a narrower definition in the context of technical drawing. Engineering drawings generally deal with mechanical engineered items, such as manufactured parts and equipment.

Engineering drawings are usually created in accordance with standardized conventions for layout, nomenclature, interpretation, appearance (such as typefaces and line styles), size, etc.

Its purpose is to accurately and unambiguously capture all the geometric features of a product or a component. The end goal of an engineering drawing is to convey all the required information that will allow a manufacturer to produce that component.

Patents
Patent drawings

The applicant for a patent will be required by law to furnish a drawing of the invention whenever the nature of the case requires a drawing to understand the invention. This drawing must be filed with the application. This includes practically all inventions except compositions of matter or processes, but a drawing may also be useful in the case of many processes.

The drawing must show every feature of the invention specified in the claims, and is required by the patent office rules to be in a particular form. The Office specifies the size of the sheet on which the drawing is made, the type of paper, the margins, and other details relating to the making of the drawing. The reason for specifying the standards in detail is that the drawings are printed and published in a uniform style when the patent issues, and the drawings must also be such that they can be readily understood by persons using the patent descriptions.

CAD (Computer Aided Design)

Today, the mechanics of the drafting task have largely been automated and accelerated through the use of Computer Aided Design systems (CAD).

There are two types of Computer Aided Design systems (CAD) used for the production of technical drawings, two dimensions ("2D") and three dimensions ("3D").

2D CAD systems such as AutoCAD replace the paper drawing discipline. The lines, circles, arcs and curves are created within the software. It is down to the technical drawing skill of the user to produce the drawing. There is still much scope for error in the drawing when producing first and third angle orthographic projections, auxiliary projections and cross sections. A 2D CAD system is merely an electronic drawing board. Its greatest strength over direct to paper technical drawing is in the making of revisions. Where as in a conventional hand drawn technical drawing, if a mistake is found, or a modification is required, a new drawing must be made from scratch. The 2D CAD system allows a copy of the original to be modified saving considerable time. 2D CAD systems can be used to create plans for large projects such as buildings and aircraft but provide no way to check the various components will fit together.

3D CAD systems such as Pro/ENGINEER first produce the geometry of the part, the technical drawing comes from user defined views of the part. Any orthographic, projected and section views are created by the software. There is no scope for error in the production of these views. The main scope for error comes in setting the parameter of first or third angle projection, and displaying the relevant symbol on the technical drawing. 3D CAD allows individual parts to be assembled together to represent the final product. Buildings, Aircraft, ships and cars are modeled, assembled and checked in 3D before technical drawings are released for manufacture.

Both 2D and 3D CAD systems can be used to produce technical drawings for any discipline. The various disciplines; electical, electronic, pneumatic, fluidic, etc., have industry recognised symbols to represent common components.

BS and ISO produce standards to show recommended practices but it is up to individuals to produce the drawings. There is no definitive standard for layout or style. The only standard across engineering workshop drawings is in the creation of orthographic projections and cross section views.

Drafting can represent two dimensions ("2D") and three dimensions ("3D") although the representation itself is always created in 2D (cf. Architectural model). Drafting is the integral communication of technical or engineering drawings and is the industrial arts sub-discipline that underlies all involved technical endeavors.

In representing complex, three-dimensional objects in two-dimensional drawings, the objects can be described by at least one view plus material thickness note, 2, 3 or as many views and sections that are required to show all features of object.

Drafting Manually or by instrument

The basic drafting procedure is to place a piece of paper (or other material) on a smooth surface with right-angle corners and straight sides—typically a drawing board. A sliding straightedge known as a T-square is then placed on one of the sides, allowing it to be slid across the side of the table, and over the surface of the paper.

"Parallel lines" can be drawn simply by moving the T-square and running a pencil or technical pen along the T-square's edge, but more typically the T-square is used as a tool to hold other devices such as set squares or triangles. In this case the drafter places one or more triangles of known angles on the T-square—which is itself at right angles to the edge of the table—and can then draw lines at any chosen angle to others on the page. Modern drafting tables (which have by now largely been replaced by CAD workstations) come equipped with a drafting machine that is supported on both sides of the table to slide over a large piece of paper. Because it is secured on both sides, lines drawn along the edge are guaranteed to be parallel.

In addition, the drafter uses several tools to draw curves and circles. Primary among these are the compasses, used for drawing simple arcs and circles, and the French curve, typically a piece of plastic with complex curves on it. A spline is a rubber coated articulated metal that can be manually bent to most curves.

Drafting templates assist the drafter with creating recurring objects in a drawing without having to reproduce the object from scratch every time. This is especially useful when using common symbols; i.e. in the context of stagecraft, a lighting designer will typically draw from the USITT standard library of lighting fixture symbols to indicate the position of a common fixture across multiple positions. Templates are sold commercially by a number of vendors, usually customized to a specific task, but it is also not uncommon for a drafter to create their own templates.

This basic drafting system requires an accurate table and constant attention to the positioning of the tools. A common error is to allow the triangles to push the top of the T-square down slightly, thereby throwing off all angles. Even tasks as simple as drawing two angled lines meeting at a point require a number of moves of the T-square and triangles, and in general drafting can be a time consuming process.

A solution to these problems was the introduction of the mechanical "drafting machine", an application of the pantograph (sometimes referred to incorrectly as a "pentagraph" in these situations) which allowed the drafter to have an accurate right angle at any point on the page quite quickly. These machines often included the ability to change the angle, thereby removing the need for the triangles as well.

In addition to the mastery of the mechanics of drawing lines, arcs and circles (and text) onto a piece of paper—with respect to the detailing of physical objects—the drafting effort requires a thorough understanding of geometry, trigonometry and spatial comprehension, and in all cases demands precision and accuracy, and attention to detail of high order.

Although drafting is sometimes accomplished by a project engineer, architect—or even by shop personnel such as a machinist—skilled drafters (and/or designers) usually accomplish the task and are always in demand to some level.

Sketching

Architect's sketches primarily serve as a way to try out different ideas and establish a composition before undertaking a more finished work, especially when the finished work is expensive and time consuming.

Architectural sketches, for example, are a kind of diagrams. These sketches, like metaphors, are used by architects as a mean of communication in aiding design collaboration. This tool helps architects to abstract attributes of hypothetical provisional design solutions and summarize their complex patterns, hereby enhancing the design process.

The Year 2010 will soon be over and we Should reflect back and take account of the events that have taken place.

I have seen a lot of Small Businesses including Millwork, Casework & Wood Work Companies down size and even go Under in this tough Economy. I have to be thankful that We have been able to build new Client base steadily over the last 8 Months Providing Drafting Services, Millwork Shop Drawings, Casework Shop Drawings, Custom Woodwork Drawings, 3-D Modeling and 3-D Photo Rendering.

We live day to day and may not realize that the Small Businesses are the Horse Power of the Economy and while not as Major an event as some of the things i have listed below, still down sizing and closings are Major to the lives of the Communities and small Businesses. We as Small Business owners have to be better, stronger, faster and use technology, Skills and Innovation to be Competitive in a down economy. I would like to see 2011 be the year of the Small Business. My Goals for 2011 are to Gain Strength and Wisdom, and to enjoy the love of my friends and family.

Our days working to Survive and Provide in a Down Economy. So reflect back on the events that where important to you and maybe tell me a little about them!

I know that regardless of all that has occurred my most major events have been things like Camping with the family, Building Stuff with the kids, and The Major Days at the Beach. These are the things i will most reflect on!

Always Check the vertical clearance. Often we have Architectural drawings come in with drawers noted as "file drawer". They also have a clear vertical of 9 5/8". That's fine if your hanging system leaves 0.00" between the hanging folder bottom edge and the drawer bottom, and you don't put anything in the folders that extends above them. We always use 11 1/4" as a standard from interior drawer bottom to bottom of the drawer above or face frame rail depending on the cabinet type. I hate it when manila folders poking up above the hanging folder go pbpbpbpbpbpbpbt against the dust panel as you push the drawer in.

61G1-23.015 Responsible Supervising Control Over Architectural Practice Outside of the Architect’s Office.
An architect may seal and sign any documents, instruments of service, specifications, reports or other work which requires the seal and signature of a registered architect prepared outside of the architect’s office, so long as all of the procedures set forth below are met. This Rule (61G1-23.015, F.A.C.) does not address the procedures required of an architect in sealing and signing work which falls within the definition of “interior design” as that term is defined in Section 481.203(8), F.S.
(1) The architect accepts professional responsibility for all architectural design activities of a project performed outside of the architect’s office throughout design development and the production of all documents and instruments of service. The architect shall prepare and maintain as evidence of the architect’s continuing effort in such work: written calculations, correspondence, time records, check prints, telephone logs, site visit logs or research done for the project and shall provide such evidence to state or local authorities upon their request.
(2) The architect maintains written documentation that the architect has personally supervised the preparation of all documents and instruments of service, reviewed all project data, personally inspected the project site and entered into a written agreement with the persons preparing the documents accepting professional responsibility for such work.
(3) The architect makes certain, if the work which the architect intends to seal and sign has been prepared by another person outside the architect’s office, that whenever such final work is submitted to a client, building owner or building user, the architect is present during such submissions in order to respond to questions from the client, owner or user. The architect shall maintain written minutes of such a submission meeting.
(4) If an architect fails to maintain written documentation of the items set forth in subsections (1)-(3) above, when such are applicable, then the architect shall be considered to be in violation of Section 481.221(4) and (5), F.S., and the architect shall be subject to disciplinary penalties as provided in paragraph 61G1-12.004(2)(c), F.A.C., “Plan Stamping.”

Jim Reedy Custom Woodworking is a one-man shop that makes beautiful furniture in a number of styles. I use fine quality solid wood and utilize hand carving and traditional joinery to create my furniture. You will find examples of my work on the following pages. All of my work is custom made for the client. I do not keep any stock for sale. If you have space in your home for something special, please give me a call or send me an email.

If you are looking for an exceptional piece of furniture for your home, consider an eighteenth century-style highboy. A highboy is a classic that can be handed down from one generation to another. It is a large piece of furniture that will make a major statement in any room. This highboy is based on one made in about 1750 in Philadelphia. The lower case is constructed with mortise and tenon joinery while the top case is hand-dovetailed for exceptional strength. Altogether there are 240 dovetails in this piece. The highboy has 11 drawers plus small two hidden compartments. This piece was made from solid cherry with poplar as the secondary wood, but it can be made in mahogany or walnut instead if you prefer. The bonnet top and flame finials are design features often found in this type of piece. The finials were turned on a lathe and then hand carved. The decorative shells on the center drawers were hand carved as well. The cabriole legs and pad feet were shaped by hand. The hardware is an authentic reproduction of hardware from that period. The finish is shellac.

Job Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, Drafters can expect slower than average employment growth, with the best opportunities expected for those with at least 2 years of post secondary training.

Employment change. Employment of drafters is expected to grow by 4 percent between 2008 and 2018, which is slower than the average for all occupations. However, growth will vary by specialty.

Architectural and civil drafting is expected to be the fastest growing specialty, increasing by 9 percent, which is about as fast as the average. Increases in overall construction activity stemming from U.S. population growth and the related need to improve the Nation’s infrastructure should spur demand for drafters trained in architectural and civil design.

In contrast to employment of architectural and civil drafters, little or no change in employment is expected of mechanical drafters and of electronic and electrical drafters. Many of these workers are concentrated in slow-growing or declining manufacturing industries that offer few opportunities for growth related to expansion. However, increasingly complex design problems associated with new products and manufacturing processes will increase the demand for mechanical drafters and electronic and electrical drafters employed in engineering and drafting services firms that will be charged with finding solutions to these problems.

Across all specialties, CADD systems that are more powerful and easier to use will allow many tasks to be done by other technical professionals, thus curbing demand for drafters. Job growth also should be slowed as some drafting work, which can be done by sending CADD files over the Internet, is outsourced offshore to countries that pay lower wages.

Job prospects. Opportunities should be best for individuals with at least 2 years of postsecondary training in a drafting program that provides strong technical skills and considerable experience with CADD systems. CADD has increased the complexity of drafting applications while enhancing the productivity of drafters. It also has enhanced the nature of drafting by creating more possibilities for design and drafting. As technology continues to advance, employers will look for drafters with a strong background in fundamental drafting principles, a high level of technical sophistication, and the ability to apply their knowledge to a broader range of responsibilities. Most job openings are expected to arise from the need to replace drafters who transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force completely.

Employment of drafters remains tied to industries that are sensitive to cyclical changes in the economy, primarily construction and manufacturing. During recessions, drafters may be laid off. However, a growing number of drafters should continue to find employment on a temporary or contract basis as more companies turn to the employment services industry to meet their changing needs.

Demand for particular drafting specialties varies throughout the country because employment usually is contingent on the needs of local industry.

The middle 50 percent earned between $35,290 and $55,740. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $28,220, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $67,110. Median annual wages for architectural and civil drafters in architectural, engineering, and related services were $44,390.

Median annual wages of mechanical drafters were $46,640 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $36,490 and $59,010. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $29,390, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $71,340. Median annual wages for mechanical drafters in architectural, engineering, and related services were $47,630.

Median annual wages of electrical and electronics drafters were $51,320 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $40,210 and $65,400. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $32,050, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $79,790. In architectural, engineering, and related services, median annual wages for electrical and electronics drafters were $47,910.
